The Miro Quartet's "131" Reveals the Catharsis Behind Beethoven's Genius

As part of their ongoing project to record all of the Beethoven String Quartets, the Miro Quartet tackles String Quartet No.14, Op 131- a piece from one of the most tumultuous periods in the great composer's life.

Emerging from familial struggles at the twilight of his life, the piece is one of "yearning for something else, as well as perhaps dreams for happiness or memories of times past."

Cellist Joshua Gindele and violist John Largess explain the challenging and rewarding practice of tackling Beethoven's oeuvre and their earliest memories of experiencing the master.

"Now when I listen to these pieces I hear the voice of someone- maybe a friend, but someone who I feel like I know really well, and whose music knows me."
