Tchaikovsky and Haydn Collide in SoNA Season Opener

This Saturday the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas (SoNA) begins its 2017-18 season with a performance of Tchaikovsky's fifth, Haydn's trumpet concerto and an original piece from Music Director Paul Haas.

Principal Bassoonist, Lia Uribe, sits down with Of Note's Katy Henriksen for a preview. She talks six years of performing with SoNA, the intimacy of reed-making and deciphering the two composers' distinct sounds.

Uribe describes Tchaikovsky as an "interesting balance... of the classical forms, but with these beautiful emotions that I feel like only Russians can deliver,"she says. "He is romanticism without being cheesy."

"Haydn is organization, the classical form, everything to perfection, but with simplicity," she says. "It's just an earworm, that's how his music works."

Listen to Uribe's full conversation above.
