A-State Athletics says that head women's basketball coach Matt Daniel has resigned.
A-State Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Bowen on Monday announced Daniel's resignation effective immediately. Bowen said an interim head coach could be announced as soon as Tuesday.
Daniel said in a statement that his decision to resign was in he and his family's "best interest" and thanked the administration for the opportunity.
“I want to thank Dr. [Kelly] Damphousse and Dr. [Chuck] Welch for the opportunity to serve as the head women’s basketball coach at Arkansas State,” said Daniel. “I love A-State and NEA, and I’m proud to call Jonesboro my hometown."
Bowen said he was "disappointed" in his decision and tried to talk him into staying, but wished him "the best moving forward."
“I was informed tonight by Matt Daniel that he has decided to resign as our head women’s basketball coach,” said Bowen. "While Coach Daniel’s decision to resign isn’t our Athletics Department’s desired outcome, we want to thank him for everything he did for our program as head coach and wish him the best moving forward.”
Daniel was in his third season leading the women's basketball program. The Red Wolves are 4-6 this season. Their next game is at home against Mississippi Valley State on December 14 at 7 at First National Bank Arena.
