During the early days of the pandemic, Memphis Made Brewing Co. shared a recipe for making homemade beer bread.
In April 2020, the brewery started handing out flyers with the recipe to customers who picked up beers at the brewery. “We knew people had some time on their hands,” said Andy Ashby, co-founder and sales manager of Memphis Made Brewing Co. “We thought it would be a fun thing to do at home.”
And he was right!
Making your own bread is simpler than you think. Many bread recipes require live yeast as well as long times for the dough to rise.
Memphis Made’s recipe only requires three ingredients and takes three simple steps.
The results are a flavorful bread that is just as delicious as it is fun to make.
The ingredients are ones you probably already have at home: 3 cups self-rising flour, ½ cup sugar and one 12-ounce beer. If you don’t have self-rising flour, just make your own by adding 2 teaspoons baking powder and ¼ teaspoon salt for every 1 cup of all-purpose flour.
Andy said the type of beer will slightly change the flavor of the bread. He said a delicately-hopped cream ale like their Junt beer will result in a more traditional loaf of bread. A malty beer, like Memphis Made’s Fireside, will make a sweeter, more cake-like loaf.
It’s so easy to make, experiment with your favorite beers. Just be sure to save a beer or two to enjoy with a buttered slice of warm, freshly baked bread.
