Event Description

The Butterfield Overland Mail Route was the first overland transcontinental mail route by stagecoach.. It was the longest line in the history of the world (2,812 miles). The Butterfield operated from 1858-1961 and went from St. Louis, MO to San Francisco, CA. Marilyn Heifner, former President of Heritage Trail Partners, will discuss how the Butterfield was a major factor in the settlement of Arkansas and the American West before the Civil War, the reasons for its being, and challenges facing John Butterfield in developing the route as well as challenges of those who traveled on the Butterfield stagecoaches.
