Short stories can be wonders of style and compressed psychological insight. "I would really hope this would make people see the short story ass an important art, not just something you played around with until you got a novel", said Alice Munro when she won the 2013 Nobel Prize for Literature. Class will read The Beggar Maid, Munro's 1978 collection of connected stories. Linda Leavell, the instructor, is a biographer and scholar of American literature. Participants are to furnish their own copy of The Beggar Maid and should read the first three stories before the first class.
