Trees, Shrubs & Woody Vines Workshop

Trees, Shrubs & Woody Vines Workshop

Join botanists Jennifer Ogle and Theo Witsell as we learn to identify trees, shrubs and woody vines of the Ozarks. This workshop will teach basic woody plant identification using the illustrations, botanical terms and plant keys found in the book Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines of Arkansas. We’ll spend the morning session in the classroom using the book, fresh plant material and PowerPoint slides to learn basic woody plant structure and common plant groups. After lunch, we’ll head outside to identify woody plants growing around the lake, streams and uplands surrounding BGO. No previous plant identification experience is needed for this basic woody plant identification workshop. Lunch will be provided.

What to bring:
Your copy of Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines of Arkansas (available online at https://www.uapress.com/product/trees-shrubs-and-woody-vines-of-arkansas or in Fayetteville at Pearl’s Books, Pack Rat Outdoor Center, and Uncle Sam’s Safari Outfitters). The authors will have a few copies available for $30 each the day of the workshop.
If you have a 10x or 16x hand lens or magnifying glass, bring it. Otherwise, we will have some for participants to use.
Sturdy close-toed shoes or hiking boots, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and water.
