The UAFS Gallery of Art and Design is excited to present a recent major donation and accompanying exhibition for Fall 2023!

This first major exhibition on Harold Keller (1928-2017) will be based on a transformative donation of the artist’s work to the permanent collection. The donation, consisting of over forty works including paintings, drawings, ceramics, and artist books, along with a collection of over three-hundred working drawings, makes the university the largest repository of the artist’s work and the largest gift to the gallery to date.

"Harold Keller: Portals" will explore the artist’s whimsical style that fused the fantastic with the everyday. It will also commemorate his influence on the institution as both artist and professor, serving as the first full-time art professor at Fort Smith Junior College (now UAFS) from 1956-1962.

Exhibit and Gallery are open weekdays 9am-4pm.

The Lake Fayetteville Watershed Partnership and City of Fayetteville team up twice a year to give Lake Fayetteville some TLC and are asking for your help! Lake Fayetteville is a popular destination, and volunteers can help take care of this well-loved spot by lending a hand to clean up litter around the lake's trails, streets, and park lands. Special emphasis will be given to the lake waters and shorelines to collect trash that has already entered the waterway.

Different ways you can plug in and help make this event a success:
* Wear rain boots, muck boots, or hip waders to help clean along the muddy banks where trash is hard to reach
* RSVP to bring a canoe/kayak and paddle the shores (Check in at Environmental Study Center)
* RSVP to borrow a kayak and paddle the shores (Check in at Marina)
* Show up! Bring yourself, some friends, or family, and take a short hike to one of the litter "hot-spots" found throughout the park
* Volunteer as a group. Let us know how many people from your organization or business would like to attend, and we can pre-arrange a cleanup area for you and have your supplies packed and ready to go when you arrive
* Assist with event recycling or breakdown.

Supplies & Snacks:
Upon arrival, volunteers will receive supplies, instruction, and a cleanup destination.
Volunteers are encouraged to wear closed-toe, ankle supportive footwear. Light snacks will be provided; please remember to bring a refillable water bottle.

Weather:
The cleanup will still happen with light rain, but start-time may be delayed in the case of thunder or lightning. If heavy rains are scheduled to persist, the event will be postponed or canceled and updates posted on the City of Fayetteville Facebook and Lake Fayetteville Watershed Partnership Facebook pages.

The Learning Fields at Chaffee Crossing in Fort Smith, Arkansas will be hosting a Fig Tasting and Fig Plant Swap on Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 10 AM to Noon.

This event is open to anyone who grows, or wants to grow, figs. However, no selling of plants or products is allowed. This is a free swap.

Attendees are encouraged to bring 3 (or more) fig plants to swap as well as a few ripe figs from those varieties, if possible.

Start air layering your extra branches or rooting some cuttings the first or second week of August so the new plants can be potted up and ready to share by September 30. Please label the plants that you bring with the variety, the flavor profile (berry, sugar, honey, etc), and your name.

The fig tasting and plant swap will begin at 10 AM. Tours of the Fig Trial will begin at 11 AM.

Each Saturday, Best Friends hosts an adoption event at the Pet Resource Center featuring adoptable dogs and cats from some of the members of our NWA PAW (Partnership for Animal Welfare), a coalition of animal shelters and rescues across Northwest to save the lives of homeless pets.

Participation will vary from week to week. Adoption fees will vary according to the individual organizations. All proceeds benefit the participating partners.

Come out to visit adoptable pets and show your support for animal shelters across our region.
