Georgian composer Giya Kancheli released a new recording in October which includes two previously unrecorded major works: Chiaroscuro for violin and chamber orchestra, and Twilight for two violins and chamber orchestra. In the liner notes for the album, Kancheli comments on his music's inherent melancholy: "You won't find any calls here to struggle, to equality, to the bright future. What's recorded here is, rather, bitter sorrow over the imperfection of a society that cannot draw lessons from the most terrible historical examples." Hear highlights from this recording and more on Friday's program.
