The works of Bach have a recurring impact in cellist MattHaimovitz's life, describing them to Of Note's Katy Henriksen as "the cellist's bible," adding that they are part of his "daily diet," playing "two movements of Bach every day."
Haimovitz's first Bach experience as a budding cellist was with Pablo Casals' recording of Bach cello suites, which his parents bought him on vinyl as a kid. Years later, after "playing on gut strings, on a Baroque bow," on an original instrument for which Bach wrote his pieces, he's decided to take Bach to the future and transform it into a new and modern language with the help of living composers who share his passion.
Six diverse composers, including Grammy-nominated jazz icon Vijay Iyer, and legendary minimalist Phillip Glass, contribute compositions that, in Haimovitz's words, "create a bridge of 300 years" with Overtures to Bach, where modern expressions of Bach's influence can be heard next to the pieces that inspired them.
