Governor Outlines Strategy to Slow COVID-19 Spread This Winter

In his weekly briefing Tuesday, Governor Asa Hutchinson outlined a strategy for slowing the spread of COVID-19 in the state this winter following record-high daily new cases and hospitalizations throughout October. He called it a layered approach that includes familiar directives like social distancing and wearing masks. Hutchinson also pointed out COVID-19 is now the third leading cause of death in the state after cancer and heart attacks. More than 2,000 Arkansans have died from coronavirus complications since March. Arkansas Secretary of Health Dr. Jose Romero once again urged residents to reconsider how they go about traditional holiday family gatherings this fall and winter. Bo Ryall, the president and CEO of the Arkansas Hospital Association, also spoke at yesterday's briefing and warned that hospitalizations are taking a toll on the state's healthcare system, especially when it comes to personnel. Johnny Key, the state Secretary of Education, said there have been eight modifications to learning at schools this week, the smallest weekly number since the school year began.
