KUAF Arts Beat: Kevin Arnold's "Wishful Misgivings" Depict a Discordant Modern Experience

Kat Wilson

Kevin Arnold's latest exhibition at Fenix Gallery, "Wishful Misgivings," exemplifies all the ambivalence of its title, a retreat into sickly-sweet nostalgia spurred on by a chaotic and disordered world.

Arnold specializes in large canvases that explode in colorful stimuli--but the composition is far from haphazard. Indeed, the approach works within "Wishful Misgivings" to represent the fragmented, overloaded experience that is 2018 in the United States.

"It's sort of the harsh reality of everything laced with the fantasy escapism that we all attempt to do," says Arnold, who counts numerous family trips road trips from his home in Van Buren to Disneyworld as a catalyst for imagry that winds up in the exhibit.

"Wishful Misgivings" opens Thursday, August 2, in downtown Fayetteville's Fenix Gallery, 16 W Center St., in conjunction with First Thursday. The exhibition is open to the public through the end of September.
