KUAF Arts Beat: From Realism to Abstraction in Brushstrokes

Caleb Cameron

Trained in trompe l'oeil realism, Jody Thompson decided to go back to school after 20 years between degrees to hone his paintings into abstraction, a form he was first drawn to when he rendered seismic geologic images into abstract paintings for a seismology company.

"That made me realize there was a whole new way to addressing realism that could appear as abstraction," he explains.

When he attempted the new techniques in his studio, it didn't work. So he went back to school to pursue his MFA in painting at the University of Arkansas in hopes of  mastering abstraction in a way all his own.

The result is "Liable to Change," a collection of large paintings that burst with color and geometry. The exhibit is on display at the Fine Arts Center Gallery on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville through Friday, March 15.
