Of Note: Pianist Jenny Lin Brings Philip Glass Etudes To Northwest Arkansas

Courtesy Jenny Lin

Steinway pianist Jenny Lin has always known Philip Glass music. And now she's toured alongside the master of minimalism as part of his world tour presenting the pieces live.

She'll bring a few of them to Northwest Arkansas alongside jazz piano heavyweight Aaron Diehl and contemporary music champion Maki Namekawa for a night of Philip Glass piano solo works at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

"I think Philip Glass wrote his Etudes in the beginning just thinking about making himself a better pianist," she says of what started in 1994 when Glass wrote his first to conductor Dennis Russell Davies. He continued over the years until he reached 20.

"What's great about them is that you can play them as a semi-professional as well as a professional. They're open to all different kinds of interpretations," she explains.

Lin also presents a live rendering of her children's storybook "Melody's Mostly Musical Day," for a free children's concert at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, also at Crystal Bridges. That concert is free with registration through guest services.
