Scratching the Surface: Saturn's Hexagon

NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute/Hampton University

This is Scratching the Surface with Caitlin Ahrens, the Pluto Manager at the Center for Space and Planetary Science.

Saturn, the second largest planet, looks serene with its famous series of rings. In reality this gas giant is home to erratic weather and massive storms. Famous images from the NASA Voyager mission first showed a huge hexagon shape at the poles of Saturn, but it wasn't until images from the Cassini mission that this phenomenon was recognized as a convergence in these storms. In this episode, Caitlin explains what the hexagon storms tell us about Saturn's ecosystem.
