As State Reports 969 New COVID-19 Cases, Lawmakers Sue Health Department

Arkansas's new cases of COVID-19 increased by 969 in the last 24-hour monitoring period out of 7,827 tests. Over 200 of those cases were diagnosed in Washington County. Governor Asa Hutchinson said 81 percent of the new Washington County cases were among people between the ages of 18 and 24. Secretary of Health Dr. added that college and university populations are driving the increase in new cases and urged the wearing of face coverings and social distancing. Seven other counties recorded more than 20 new cases including 47 in Benton County and 36 in Sebastian County. The state reported 20 additional deaths. The governor also addressed a lawsuit filed by several Arkansas legislators challenging actions recommended by the ADH during the pandemic that have been backed by Hutchinson. The lawmakers want decisions regarding health regulations to be determined by the General Assembly, but Hutchinson said department of health experts best know how protect Arkansans during health emergencies.
