World Premiere Performance Takes Us "Further Within" Ourselves

The fall season of Trillium Salon Series launches this week with a world premiere performance of a violin duet, which the composer describes as "very meditative."

Fayetteville-based composer and musician Ryan Cockerham explains that his piece, titled "Further Within," is music that's designed to provoke not only a response to the music but to each individual's own situation.

"I think of this album as music that's supposed to enable a process. Maybe that process is a personal reflection," he says, a journey of discovery to the depth of one's own psyche to contemplate: "What do we reveal when we look further into ourselves."

The three movement work was inspired, in part, by a barren landscape photo taken by the composer's father in a portion of Big Bend National Park in Texas that juts right up against Mexico. Cockerham describes the rocky barren terrain as  "alien landscapes" that evoke a "Martian feel."

"Further Within," the title track to an album of the same name Cockerham recorded with violinist Er-Gene Kahng, will be played in full by Cockerham and Kahng Thursday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m. at the editorial office of Arkansas' arts magazine, Idle Class, located at 626 W. Dickson. The free concert will also have a diverse array of food and drink available from sponsors Blackboard GroceryConscious CocoApple Blossom Brewing CompanyOzark Natural Foods, and Pink House Alchemy.

Trillium Salon Series, a new live concerts initiative I co-organize, takes classical music outside the concert hall into intimate settings for a showcase on compelling classical, as well as the thriving local food and drink culture blossoming in our hills.
