Springdale Public Schools

In the Springdale School District, substitutes who can typically take a job at any school, are being assigned to a building this year as a way to limit the spread of COVID-19. According to the Arkansas Department of Health, Springdale, the state's largest district, had 18 active cases as of Sept. 7.

The pandemic has changed nearly everything, including back-to-school shopping for students, parents and teachers, so stores like Walmart are trying to find new ways to reach customers to provide items that weren't essential before, but are now.

With about 22,500 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, the Springdale School District is the largest in the state. The district also has many students of Latino and Marshallese descent, which are two communities that have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. We discuss the district's reopening plans come fall with Superintendent Jared Cleveland, who started his new position on July 1.

To make sure their graduating seniors know they're appreciated, the Springdale School District will share special video tributes to them. Business owners, community members and elected officials share their thoughts for each of the district's high school gradutating classes.

Starting next school year, students at Springdale's Har-Ber High School will be able to take aviation courses that could lead to a private pilot's license by the time they graduate. The school received 15 flight simulators earlier this year after math teacher Jason McMullen started an aviation club three years ago.

Pete speaks with Diego Alonso - a FoodCorps service member who works with Springdale Schools. He describes the mission of this national group and its impact on our community.

An article originally published in the Har-Ber Herald can once again be put online after the school district reversed its decision to take it down. The article was taken down days after it was published October 30, and Springdale School District officials decided Tuesday afternoon that the original article could be republished.

We speak with Jessica Olson, who is a physical education and health teacher at Springdale's Sonora Middle School, about the kind of role model she hopes to be for the Marshallese students at her school as she is half Marshallese herself, making her the first teacher of Marshallese descent in a school district that has thousands of Marshallese students.

The Don Tyson School of Innovation opened in 2014 at the Jones Center. Last fall, the school moved to a newly-constructed campus in east Springdale. Today, faculty, students and local dignitaries attended a dedication ceremony.
