Over the past year, the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith has hosted town halls with political candidates. With the midterms over, organizers plan to continue the series with legislators. Nov. 9 UAFS hosted a town hall featuring Senate Majority Leader Jim Hendren and Senate Minority Leader Keith Ingram, who discussed the importance of civility in public service.

The estate gift by Myles Friedman is the third-largest gift and largest gift from an individual in University of Arkansas-Fort Smith history. Friedman was a longtime Fort Smith resident who passed away in September 2017. The estate gift is expected to bring in $400,000 annually, which is enough to fund 60 full-ride scholarships for UAFS students.

UAFS will implement a flat-rate tuition good for up to four years for some students.

UAFS Test Drives Automower

The grounds crew at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith is getting a little extra help this semester, thanks to a new automower. At the end of the trial period, the grounds manager hopes to purchase two mowers, which could save about 100 man-hours a year.

UAFS Chancellor Takes on New Role in South Dakota

After 12 years at UAFS, Chancellor Paul B. Beran is leaving to assume the role of executive director and chief executive officer of the South Dakota Higher Education Board of Regents. Since becoming chancellor in July 2006, UAFS has nearly doubled the amount of baccalaureate degree programs it offers, tripled student housing capacity and expanded the Boreham Library from 30,000 to more than 70,000 square feet.

Workforce Program Receives $2 Million in Grants

The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith has received nearly $2 million in grants from the Arkansas Department of Higher Education for the continuation of the university’s Regional Workforce Grant programs. The funding will allow UAFS to offer concurrent credit courses to high school students for two more years in robot automation and cyber systems to help address the skills gap in those fields.

Grant Funds Free After-School Dental Clinic

The Blue & You Foundation has awarded $2.3 million to 40 organizations across the state to support various health initiatives. The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith is using its $30,000 grant to provide dental care to children in need through its After School Smilz program. The free clinics are scheduled for Feb. 6, March 6 and April 3. Parents can schedule appointments by calling 479-788-7270.
