Of Note for Fri., June 17, 2016: Bloch's Violin Sonata

Ernest Bloch’s Violin Sonata No. 1 is widely considered one of the most demanding and technically complicated for the instrument.

Composer Roger Sessions described the piece as having a characteristic “mood of pessimism, irony, and nostalgia.” Bloch himself claimed it was an expression of “the world as it is: the frantic struggle of blind and primordial forces.” Hear this complicated and beautiful piece from 11 to noon on KUAF.
