Make Walking a Part of Your Lenten Practice

Church Health

Right now, many Christians are observing the season of Lent.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues until Easter Sunday, and it commemorates the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness before starting his ministry. Lent is a spiritual journey where Christians are asked to similarly ready themselves for a deeper faith experience.

For many people, a central act of Lent is engaging in some sort of fast. You probably know someone who is giving up chocolate or soda, and you might have decided to give up sweets yourself until you saw the girl from down the street selling Girl Scout cookies!

The point of fasting during Lent is to engage in a regular practice that helps keep your mind tethered to God.  As such, we don’t necessarily have to give up something. We could just as easily take on something.

One of the things that fascinates me about the prophets of the Bible and other religious traditions is that they walked a lot. And for Christians, there isn’t a more poignant walk than Jesus carrying his cross to Calvary. For us, walking can be an act of both spiritual and physical devotion. Church Health has created a few resources for people who want to make walking, reflecting and prayer a part of their daily Lenten practice. You can find them in our online store at store.churchhealth.org.

But you certainly don’t need a book. Simply add a 20-minute walk to your day during Lent. Make your walk a time when you intentionally talk to God.  Who knows where such a journey could lead?
