BTH: Local Government Consolidation

In 2010 there was a vote to consolidate Memphis City and Shelby County governments, but it was defeated. Recently, there has been a new push to bring consolidation back to the ballot for a revote.

Before a merger proposal can be considered, a diverse charter council is assembled to gather data and research about how the consolidation would work. Memphis City Councilman Chase Carlisle says there is a multitude of benefits to a merger, but many are hesitant because of preconceived notions and misinformation.

Guests explain what local government consolidation would look like, what it means for schools, taxes, and more.
