Old Settler Cherokee in the Arkansas River Valley and the Dwight Mission
Old Settler Cherokee in the Arkansas River Valley and the Dwight Mission
Guest speaker Dr. Emily Beahm, Arkansas Archeological Survey station archeologist, will present her research on Dwight Mission, the only Native American boarding school in Arkansas. It was the first Cherokee mission west of the Mississippi River and opened in January of 1822. Dr. Beahm's research centers on what life was like for the children who attended this early Presbyterian mission school, their parents and the communities along the central Arkansas River Valley in the early nineteenth century. This event is free and open to the public.
