The Roots of American Square Dance

Steve Green, well known square dance caller and national Buck (traditional percussive) Dance champion, will host a presentation on the roots and development of American Square Dance, with a focus on the role of the square dance caller. Steve will weave together the African, Native American, and European cultural roots that resulted in an American folk dance recognizable around the world. This multi-media presentation with the nationally respected string band, “The Old 78’s”, will include lecture, archival photos and video clips, live music illustrating regional differences in the dance tunes, demonstrations of step dancing, a question and answer period, and audience participation square dancing.
