Unveiling, Historic marker honoring Fayetteville native Theressa Hoover
The public is invited to attend an unveiling ceremony at noon on February 28, 2026, for a commemorative plaque to honor Theressa Hoover (1925-2013), a Fayetteville native and a groundbreaking African American leader in the global ecumenical movement. From 1968 to 1990, Hoover served as Associate/Deputy General Secretary of the Women’s Division of the United Methodist Church’s Board of Global Ministries. She shattered barriers as the highest-ranking Black female executive within any mainline denomination in the United States. She spent her last years in Fayetteville and worshipped at Sequoyah United Methodist Church, where her funeral was held in 2013. During her years at the helm of the Women's Division, she worked to strengthen the role of women and minorities within not only her own denomination but also, as a member of the National Council of Churches, others as well.
