Modern composer and pianist Stefan Litwin wrote “Thoreau’s Nightmare” in 2003 both as a tribute to its namesake and as a commentary on the rising tensions between the U.S. and Europe over the pending war in Iraq. The piece is written for one pianist on two pianos, and according to Litwin, the interweaving melodies “follow no logical path, but wander rather aimlessly from moment to moment, much like scenes in a dream.” Tune in to Tuesday’s program to catch a performance of this intriguing piece as played by the composer himself.
