Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola says he intends to run for reelection in 2018. Stodola’s statement comes after State Rep. Warwick Sabin announced over the weekend that he’s exploring a mayoral run. Stodola has been in office since 2007.
The developing race for mayor coincides with Arkansas’s Capitol city seeing a rate increase in violent crime, a school district under state control and the impending major expansion of Interstate 30 through the heart of downtown. In a press release, Stodola, a former prosecutor, says his “number one priority right now is Little Rock and the challenges we are facing, not a political race that is 17 months away.”
In the statement Stodola identified public safety, jobs and economic development as his top concerns. The position of Little Rock Mayor is non-partisan, but both Stodola and Sabin are Democrats.
