Craighead County Sheriff Marty Boyd presented a Life Saving Award to a sergeant that prevented a woman from killing herself.

The incident happened earlier this year when the woman was threatening to jump off of a bridge.  The bridge was located over traffic on Interstate 555.

Sergeant Phillip Vanwinkle with the Craighead County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call and pleaded with the woman not to jump.  He also called authorities to stop traffic on the interstate and called for additional help.

The woman had called people to tell them goodbye.  In a moment when the woman was not looking in Vanwinkle’s direction, he was able to get her to the ground and handcuffed her.

Sheriff Boyd says the actions saved her life and he was recognized last night before the Craighead County Quorum Court.
