Osher Lifelong Learning Institute: How Did Life Begin & How Often Does It Occur in the Universe??

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute: How Did Life Begin & How Often Does It Occur in the Universe??

Darwin thought life
on Earth began in a “warm pond”. Now we
think it probably started in geothermal features
like deep sea vents, but we don’t know.
We do know that it started soon after Earth
cooled and formed oceans. Are we a special
case, or is life common in the universe? Dr.
Malcolm Cleaveland, UA Emeritus Professor,
will lead class participants in an exporation
of Mars, looking for past or present life, and
discuss other places in the solar system that
might have life, like some moons of Jupiter and Saturn.
