COVID-19 Deaths in Arkansas Surpass 800

Sept. 1, 2020 2:26 p.m. — During today's daily COVID-19 briefing, Gov. Asa Hutchinson reported the state has 61,497 positive cases, an increase of 273 from yesterday. Hospitalizations increased by 3 for a total of 423. Arkansas has 814 deaths related to the coronavirus, an increase of 17. Health Secretary Dr. Jose Romero said 6 of those deaths were the result of delayed reporting. Five deaths occurred in nursing homes and one was in a correctional facility. Officials reported that about 95 percent of all Arkansans who have died from COVID-19 had underlying condidtions like diabetes or heart disease.

In the last 24 hours, 3,530 tests were conducted. That's about 1,000 less than the day prior. The state conducted 186,379 tests in August, short of its goal of 190,000. Gov. Hutchinson announced a goal to complete 180,000 tests in September.

The state has 5,036 active cases, 430 less than yesterday. There are 85 patients on ventilators, a decrease of 2. Only four counties had more than 20 new cases: Pulaski County with 44, Benton County with 29, Sebastian County with 24 and Washington County with 21.

Dr. Romero announced there will be several testing events throughout the state this week including a three-day clinic at the University of Arkansas.

This week the university reported an increase of 151 new cases over a three-day period. Dr. Romero said they'll have a better idea of the prevalence of the virus on the campus in a couple of days once they complete the mass testing events.

Gov. Hutchinson also reminded Arkansans they have 30 days to complete the 2020 Census.
