Various Artists: 'Jingle Bell Jazz'
As jazz critic Murray Horwitz puts it, "Just because a CD is a survey of Christmas music, it doesn't mean that it can't have great music." The all-star lineup of the 1990 album, Jingle Bell Jazz, includes Dexter Gordon, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock.
Thelonious Monk: 'Thelonious Himself'
After years of being ignored by critics, Thelonious Monk finally became a star in 1957 while playing in a quartet with John Coltrane. The same year, Monk recorded the jazz classic, Thelonious Himself. This innovative album contains a 21-minute version of his most recognizable song, "Round Midnight."
Tito Puente: 'El Rey: Live 1984'
When people think of Latin jazz, they often think of just one name: Tito Puente. Nicknamed "The King of Mambo," the Puerto Rican recorded more than 100 albums and won multiple Grammy Awards. In 1984, Puente performed his Latin magic in front of a San Francisco audience, resulting in El Rey: Live 1984.
Grunge, Rap Music Added to U.S. Recording Registry
Glenn Miller's "In the Mood," Edward R. Murrow's wartime broadcasts from London and Public Enemy's influential hip-hop album Fear of a Black Planet are among the recordings added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry.
