Heart disease still leading cause of death, higher in rural areas

Officials with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute say after steady declines in the early 21st century, heart disease-related deaths have increased since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sean Coady, deputy branch chief in the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the National Institutes of Health, says heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is often higher in rural communities.
