Governor Gives Briefing From Jonesboro

May 27, 2020 3:10 p.m. -- Gov. Asa Hutchinson held his daily coronavirus response briefing from Jonesboro. He reported 97 additional cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours out of more than 4,000 tests, which is the smallest total increase in several days. The cumulative coronavirus count in Arkansas stands at 6,277 with 120 deaths. Of that total, 1,733 cases are active and just fewer than 1,200 of those are considered to be in the community. The others have been attributed to correctional facilities and nursing homes.

The briefing also included remarks about the economy as the state remains in the first phase of gradual reopening for businesses. As he’s done during almost every briefing since discussion of reopening businesses began, the governor emphasized a methodical approach to commerce.

He also addressed the safety of elections in November. Hutchinson said he believes he has until August to make a decision regarding “no-excuse” absentee voting.
