Of Note for Wednesday, August 5, 2015: Schoenberg's Hollywood Strings

The liner notes for Schoenberg in Hollywood remark on the composer’s exile from his home country. “Chamber Symphony No. 2,” along with countless other works by a great many composers in a variety of genres, was considered by the Nazis to be “degenerate.” Many talented Jewish “performers, composers, musicologists, and teachers were forced to emigrate […]. Many artists once celebrated throughout Europe were simply forgotten, though others were able to use their skill and experience to promote the musical life of their adopted countries.” Lucky for us, Schoenberg eventually met success in Hollywood, producing works like “Chamber Symphony;” hear it and more on Wednesday’s show.
