Although Alexander Zemlinsky's The Mermaid Suite premiered alongside Schoenberg's Pellleas und Melisande in Vienna in 1905, the former was forgotten when Zemlinsky decided not to publish the work. Inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen tale, the fantastical piece resurfaced in the 1980s long after the composer's death.
