Of Note for Sun., July 17, 2016: Beethoven's Missa Solemnis

“It could be argued that art—and music in particular—represents an engagement with the transcendental,” said Austrian conductor NikolasHarnoncourt in an interview.

Harnoncourt was speaking more specifically about the transcendence of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, a piece that the conductor grappled with throughout his musical career. Harnoncourt held his last concert in the summer of 2015 performing that piece at the Salzburg Festival, and it is now immortalized as Harnoncourt’s last recording. Hear it from 8 to 10 p.m. on KUAF.
