Legislative task force discusses better serving Arkansans with autism

Courtesy / Little Rock Public Radio

Improving services for Arkansans on the autism spectrum was the topic of discussion in a legislative task force meeting yesterday. Task Force on Autism members discussed the efficacy of existing programs and opportunities for expansion. Republican state Rep. Lee Johnson said the state should do more to support autistic adults, both through community health programs and workforce initiatives.

However, Johnson said that expanding adult services could come with a high price tag for the state. Task force member JD Schupp said he’d like to see the state invest in different types of care.

Task force members suggested a review of existing legislation, as well as a report on the efficacy of the state’s community-based health programs for autistic kids and adults. The group will meet again in the fall.
