Of Note for Tuesday, May 19: Liszt's Gypsy Flair

It's no secret that Franz Liszt was obsessed with the music of the gypsies and his Hungarian Rhapsodies are examples of this. However, according to conductor Ivan Fischer the notations given could not convey the improvisational style Liszt was going for when he composed the pieces. Fischer combined the orchestral scores with improvised gypsy arrangements, including the use of cimbalom, to bring back the original gypsy flair that he says Liszt was aiming for. Hear some of these from the Budapest Festival Orchestra as the highlight for Tuesday's program.
