Reading Palestine Book Club: "Men In The Sun"

Reading Palestine Book Club: "Men In The Sun"

Reading Palestine is a book club devoted to fiction written by Palestinians. We’ll meet at Pearl Books (28 E Center St., Fayetteville) at 6:30 on Thursday, March 13.

Our reading in march is the novella by Ghassan Kanafani, Men in the Sun, originally published in 1962. It tells the story of four Palestinian men as they attempt to make their way to Kuwait, to improve their lives by gaining employment in that country's booming economy. Kanafani's writing was influenced by the modernist style of William Faulkner, so the narration is not always straightforward, but will a repay a careful and close reading.

The book is available online (it includes other short stories but we will only discuss the novella). If anyone needs a pdf, please contact Ted Swedenburg (tsweden@uark.edu)
