Arkansas Bill Would Bar Acknowledging Trans Students' Identities in Public Schools

Jewel Hayes, a board member of NWA Equality, is a vocal Arkansas transgender civil rights activist.

Arkansas House Bill 1749, filed by Rep. Mary Bentley, R-Perryville, would require public school teachers, administrators and staff to address a transgender student only by the name and sex cited on their birth certificate. We gather reaction from Jewel Hayes, a member of of the Northwest Arkansas Equality board of directors, as well as Cathy Campbell, a licensed professional counselor who specializes in LGBTQ therapy.
