Senate Committee Kills Hate Crimes Bill, Lawmakers Propose Alternative

The original bipartisan hate crimes bill was filed in November after Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced his support for such legislation.

Senate Bill 3, a hate crimes bill filed in November and presented to the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday, aims to enhance sentencing for offenses committed because of certain attributes such as race, religion or sexual orientation. This comes nearly a week after a group of Republican legislators filed SB 622, a class-protection bill being offered as a hate crimes legislation alternative. Supporters of SB 3 say SB 622 doesn't do enough.
