Susan Werner: Pop Meets 'Classics'

Susan Werner is the empress of the unpredictable. I once asked her if she had any fear of failure, and she said absolutely, but that each new project is like jumping out of a plane — you have to take a chance and hope for the best. Interviewing her is like playing tennis with someone who's just a little better than you. She's so quick, smart and funny that you have to bring your game up a notch to keep up with her.

When we caught up in the studio this past January to mark the release of her latest album — an intriguing collection of covers merging pop and classical, called Classics — she accompanied herself on guitar and piano, joined by Julia Biber on cello. The two of them nicely convey the rich string-quartet arrangements on the album. The session is proof of her consummate musicianship and why, in my humble opinion, she's one of the best performers on the planet.
