In 1977, the National Women's Conference in Houston and a competing event in the same city set the stage for what became a deep divide between the country's political parties. Marjorie J. Spruill writes about those events, and their legacies, in her book, Divided We Stand: The Battle Over Women's Rights and Family Values That Polarized American Politics.
