The fifth annual Memphis Black Restaurant Week kicked off on Monday and culminates on Sunday March 15 with the Soulful Food Truck Festival at Tiger Lane.

This is the week to try a new restaurant, or re-visit one you haven’t been to in a while.

The list of restaurants is eclectic and diverse in menu offerings and parts of town.  The common denominator is that they are each minority owned establishments.

From sweet potato pancakes to soul rolls to peach cobbler nachos, there is a delicious offering that will appeal to everyone.

The Waffle Iron, Sage, The Office @ Uptown, The Four Way, Chef Tam’s Underground Café, Robusto by Havana Mix, Ballhoggerz BBQ, Curry N Jerk, Phillip Ashley Chocolates, Mahogany Memphis, Flava House Lounge and Flava House Express are all participating.

Here are a few things to know about the week.

Twelve restaurants are participating this year – with options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Most of the restaurants will be offering specials for the week. In fact, you could easily try all twelve during the week.  That’s our goal.

Reservations are not required at most of the participating restaurants.

Keep in mind - this is a busy week for these restaurants, many of which have small dining rooms.  If you go at prime dining hours, you may have to wait a few minutes for a table.  But be patient; it will be worth the wait.

The week ends on Sunday with The Soulful Food Truck Festival at Tiger Lane. Over 25 food trucks and over 70 vendors will participate.   Live music will be part of the fun.
